Bryan Arneson had a goal and an assist in regulation time and an overtime shoot-out goal to lead the Canmore Eagles to a 4-3 overtime shoot-out victory over the Okotoks Oilers in an Alberta Junior Hockey League game played Friday night before 656 fans in Okotoks.
The Eagles, who trailed 2-0 midway through the first period, also received goals from Simon Philp (8th) and Jeremy Margeson (3rd).
With the victory, their first in Okotoks since March 2010, the Eagle’s record improves to 7-10-1. Okotoks record fell to 10-4-3.
Goaltender Cameron Barnes was solid in the Eagle’s net, stopping 27 of 30 Oiler shots and allowed just one goal in the 3-person overtime shoot-out. Barnes is now 4-6-1 on the season.
“The boys battled extremely hard tonight, we played as a team, and everyone did their jobs,” said Eagle’s Ass. Coach and GM Jeremey Reich, who has taken over the head coaching duties while Andrew Milne attends the Team Canada West Selecting Camp. “Our penalty kill was outstanding with guys sacrificing their bodies to block shots. Cam Barnes also made some big saves for us at some key moments in the third period to give us a chance to tie the game and force overtime. This has been a very tough building for us to earn points, so the win is very satisfying.”
The road ahead doesn’t get any easier for the Eagles as they will host the defending Canadian Junior A Champion Brooks Bandits (13-3-1) at the Canmore Recreation Centre on Saturday night (Oct. 26) at 7 pm.
The Bandits come to Canmore on a high after knocking off  the previously undefeated Fort McMurray Oil Barons 2-0 on Friday night in Brooks. Fort McMurray is now 17-1-1 on the season.
