The Canmore Eagles pulled off a perfect 3-0 record at this weekend’s Calgary Cup Alberta Junior Hockey League exhibition tournament at the Max Bell Arena as they defeated the Calgary Mustangs 4-1 on Friday night, downed the Calgary Canucks 4-1 on Saturday night, and wrapped up their winning weekend with a 4-3 overtime victory over the Olds Grizzlys on Sunday afternoon.
In their first two games of the tournament, the Eagles benefitted from a very balanced scoring attack as eight different Eagle players registered goals, with several rookie prospects contributing.
In Friday’s 4-1 victory over the Calgary Mustangs, the Eagles received goals from veteran forward Jordan Revie while rookies Brett Radford, Brian Huck and Kurt Hildebrand also made the red goal light shine.
In Saturday’s 4-1 win over the Calgary Canucks, the Eagles received goals from veteran forwards Jeremy Margeson, Kyle Pauls, Simon Philp and rookie Jakob Lavoie.
In Sunday's overtime thriller, Connor Wilson had a pair of goals, while Revie and Luke Simpson chipped in with singles.
“I liked what I saw at this tournament,” said Eagles Head Coach and General Manager Andrew Milne, whose team did not win an exhibition game last season. “We’ve put a lot of different players into the lineup, and for the most part, everyone has played very well. As coaches, we’ve got some very difficult decisions to make as we trim our roster down to a more reasonable number. Some of our rookies have played exceptionally well. Believe me, it’s a good problem to have.”
NOTEBOOK: The Eagles are also expecting to have another pair of promising rookie forwards return to camp as Lane Olson (23 pts in 15 Games for the Notre Dame Hounds last season) should be returning from the Regina Pats WHL camp and Ryley Risling (23 pts in 34 Games for the Medicine Hat Southeast Tigers last season) is expected back from the Kootenay Ice WHL camp . . . .The Eagles will open their AJHL regular season next weekend with a pair of home games as the Drumheller Dragons will be first up on Friday night (Sept. 6), with the Calgary Canucks following up on Saturday night (Sept 7).
