Power failures doom Eagles

The Canmore Eagles rallied from a three-goal deficit but gave up a pair of late goals to fall 5-3 to the hometown Olds Grizzlys in Alberta Junior Hockey League action Tuesday (Sept. 27).

Kasey Hiemstra finished with a hat trick for Olds. The Grizzlys led 3-0 after two periods on goals by Sheldon Kwaitkowski, Ethan Mercer and Hiemstra.

Canmore would rally for three goals in the first 13 minutes of the third period to knot the game at 3-3. Goals came from Kyle Young, Carter Myrol on the power play, and Owen Jones.

After Canmore tied the game, Olds would pull out the win on a pair of goals by Hiemstra in the final five minutes. His second goal was a quick shot from a face-off win by Grizzly captain Liam Hughes with 4:48 to play. Hiemstra’s third goal was into an open net with eight seconds remaining.

Canmore went 1-for-8 on the power play. In the third period, the Eagles had seven minutes and 54 seconds of man-advantage time, including all of the final three minutes, as Olds took five minor penalties. The Grizzlys were 1-for-3 on the night.

Shots on goal were 49-42 in favour of Canmore, with Andraei Proctor-Ramirez in goal for the Eagles and Marek Andres between the pipes for the Grizzlys. Canmore is now 2-4-0-0 on the season. Both wins have come via the overtime route. Two of the losses this season have been by one goal. Now two losses have been by two goals, with the other two-goal loss 5-3 to the Brooks Bandits on Sept. 20, with the Eagles’ power play going 1-for-9 that night.

Next up for Canmore is a pair of games at the AJHL Showcase weekend as all 16 teams descend on Blackfalds Thursday through Sunday. The Eagles will take on the North Division squads Grande Prairie Storm on Saturday (Oct. 1) at 4:30 p.m. followed by the Lloydminster Bobcats on Sunday (Oct. 2) at 11 a.m
