Saints slip past Eagles in OT

The Spruce Grove Saints edged the Canmore Eagles 3-2 in overtime on Thursday afternoon at the Alberta Junior Hockey League Showcase.

The game summary was unavailable, however, the Eagles did rally from a 2-0 deficit after one period to tie the game at 2-2 after 40 minutes. Canmore goals came from Matt Forchuk, his fourth of the season, and Mitch Zambon, his first junior A goal.

Andrew Milne, GM and head coach of the Eagles, said he was pleased with the way the team performed.

“We were real good, played real well, although we got off to a slow start,” said Milne.

“We did not play a great first period, but responded with probably our two best periods of the year.”

It is a quick turnaround for the Eagles, as they are back on the Encana Arena ice at noon on Friday against the Drayton Valley Thunder, who lost 3-2 in overtime to the Drumheller Dragons.

Milne is expecting his charges to come out with the same effort against the Thunder as they

The Eagles newest player, Daly Hamilton, acquired from the West Kelowna Warriors (BCHL) on Wednesday, was put right into the lineup, playing alongside Jarell Pinchuk most the night.

“For his fourth ever junior game, [Hamilton] played real good,” said Milne. “He’s got confidence, poise with the puck, made some real good plays. He did a lot of good things.”

All 16 teams are in Camrose Thursday through Saturday, with team playing two games. The showcase is a chance for professional, university and junior scouts to see what the AJHL has to offer.
