Next up: Here be Dragons
The Canmore Eagles and Drumheller Dragons are set to meet again in the Alberta Junior Hockey League playoffs.
On Friday, April 3, Canmore will host Drumheller for the first game of the South Division final. At stake is a place in the championship series against either the Whitecourt Wolverines or Grande Prairie Storm, who will battle for the North Division playoff title.
Canmore, the No. 1 seed in the South, defeated the Calgary Canucks 4-2 in a best-of-seven South semifinal series.
Drumheller, the No. 2 seed in the South, posted a 2-1 overtime victory over the Camrose Kodiaks in Game 7 on Tuesday (March 31). Bradley Gallo scored the game winner 1:18 into the extra period as the Dragons overturned a 3-1 series deficit. The Kodiaks forced overtime with a power-play goal by Junshi Hideshima with 30 seconds left in regulation time.
In the North, No. 1 Whitecourt eliminated the Fort McMurray Oil Barons in five games, while No. 2 Grande Prairie swept the Lloydminster Bobcats.
The winners of the upcoming playoff matchups will meet for the league title and a trip to the Centennial Cup in May to play for a national championship.
Canmore and Drumheller have met seven times in the AJHL playoffs but a spot in the league championship series has never been the reward.
The Dragons have been to the league final once, in 2014 – losing in four games to the Spruce Grove Saints – while the Eagles are seeking their first trip to the title-deciding series.
This is only the third time the Eagles have been in a South final or a league semifinal series: losing to Whitecourt in seven games in the 2023-24 season when the league constricted to one division to finish up its complicated season when five teams jumped to the BCHL; losing in five games to the Camrose Kodiaks in 2003; and losing in seven games to Grande Prairie in 2002 when the divisions crossed over in the semifinal round.
The Dragons reached the division final or league semifinal in each of the past two seasons, losing to the eventual AJHL champion Canucks both times.
