Led by a two goal performance from Jordan Revie, the Canmore Eagles defeated the home-town Calgary Canucks 6-2 in Alberta Junior Hockey League action on Tuesday night before 218 spectators at the Max Bell Arena.
The road victory improves the Eagle’s early season record to 6-5, while the Canucks dropped to 5-6.
The Eagles also received single goals from three Canmore boys as Simon Philp (6th), Kyle Pauls (2nd) and Jeremy Gordon (1st) all scored, while rookie Logan Ferguson (3rd) rounded out the scoring
Canmore goaltender Ryan Ferguson stopped 30 of the 32 shots fired his way to improve his record to 4-5. The Eagles outshot the Canucks 36-32 on the night.
With four regulars out of the line-up with various injuries, including Nikolas Kosman, Brayden Biccum, Brett Radford and Kurt Hildebrand, the Eagles inserted several rookies into their roster for the game.
“We played a solid game from top to bottom,” said Eagle’s Head Coach and General Manager Andrew Milne. “We started the game well and managed to keep up the pace for the majority of the game. I like the fact that our players are seeing the internal competition for ice time. With four regulars out of the lineup tonight, the guys playing are going to make it hard on the coaches to put a lineup together for our home games this weekend.”
The game marked the first AJHL action for Eagle defenceman Kevin Wolf who was acquired from the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League earlier in the week.
“It was nice to see Kevin slide into his first game with some confidence,” said Milne of the 6’ 6, 200 lb American born defenceman. “He played pretty well for a guy who has been through a lot mentally during the past few days. Once he gets a little more comfortable with his new surroundings, he is only going to get better.”
The Eagles next action is this weekend when they host a pair of huge games at the Canmore Recreation Centre. The Brooks Bandits (5-5) come calling on Friday, Oct. 10 and are followed up by the Fort McMurray Oil Barons (8-5) on Saturday, Oct. 11. Both games start at 7 PM.
NOTEBOOK: With his two goals last night, Jordan Revie was named as the Eagle’s “Star of the Game”. It was the second such honour for Revie this season . . .Captain Connor Wilson picked up an assist last night and now has 15 points in just 11 games and sits in second-place in the AJHL overall scoring parade.
