MUSTANGS EDGE SHORT-HANDED EAGLES

Wednesday, October 31 – With leading scorer Zack Rassell and goaltender Ty Swabb out of the lineup nursing injuries, and forward Connor Hoekstra and head coach Andrew Milne away attending Hockey Canada’s “Team Canada West Junior A” training camp, the Canmore Eagles came up a little short last night as they dropped a 2-1 decision to the Calgary Mustangs in an Alberta Junior Hockey League game played in Calgary.
The Eagle’s depleted line-up was also dealt another serious blow when 20-year-old captain Riley Point was given a game misconduct at the 8:13 mark of the first period, following a two-minute minor for checking from behind.
Despite missing four of their key veteran players, the remaining Eagles battled hard throughout the evening and actually out-shot the home-town Mustangs by a 25-24 margin.
With the victory, the Mustangs moved into a second-place tie with Canmore in the AJHL Southern Division standings with 22 points. Canmore, with a record of 9-5-4, has played two fewer games than the Mustangs.
Despite the loss, Canmore wrapped up the October portion of their 2012-13 schedule with an impressive 5-2-3 record.
Nils Moser had the lone Eagle goal, his fourth of the season, and fourth in his last three games.
Eagle netminder Cameron Barnes played well stopping 22 out of 24 Mustang shots, but saw his overall record drop to 4-3-2.
The Eagles will now head to Okotoks for a pair of roads games facing the Oilers on Friday, November 2 and Tuesday, November 6.
The next home game for Canmore will be Tuesday, November 13 when the Calgary Canucks pay a visit to the Canmore Recreation Centre.
