The Alberta Cup is coming to Canmore from April 27 – May 1, 2016. The Alberta Cup provides players, coaches, trainers, and referees an equal opportunity to discover the great qualities of competitive hockey in a well organized and fair Zone Camp and Select Team competition. Athletes eligible for the 2016 Alberta Cup program are male players that were born in the year 2001.
The Alberta Cup program begins in early March with over 1,000 players trying out for a spot on their respective zone team. There will be a total of eight different Alberta Cup zone teams coming to Canmore including Calgary South, Calgary North, Edmonton Blue, Edmonton Yellow, Central, Northwest, South and Northeast. Each team will participate with a 20-man roster.
The teams will assemble in Canmore for practices and instruction on Wednesday, April 27. All eight teams will then play a minimum of three games on Thursday, April 28 and Friday, April 29, with playoffs set for Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1st. The A Final will be played on Sunday, May 1 at 1:45 pm. All games will be played at the Canmore Recreation Centre.
The primary purpose of the Alberta Cup is that it provides an opportunity for Western Hockey League scouts to have one final look at eligible players for this year’s Bantam draft, which will be held in Calgary the following weekend.
The Alberta Cup tournament provides a tremendous economic benefit to the entire community of Canmore as approximately 150 scouts from the WHL and over 300 parents/family members will be attendance for the four-day event.
